CCTV cuts may make streets more dangerous

Northampton Borough Council has admitted it may have to cut back on the cost of running its CCTV network and has suggested cutting £39,000 from the town’s CCTV budget for 2012.

However these cut backs have left many fearing that reductions to the number of CCTV cameras in the town would make people feel unsafe. Councillor Lee Mason, leader of the Labour opposition party in the town fears that cutting CCTV will make Northampton more dangerous.

Northampton Borough Council has declared the town has so many CCTV cameras it is impossible to monitor them all, there are currently more than 500 cameras in the town and the Borough Council have confirmed some of the devices have captured no crimes at all. However Councillor Lee Mason believes these proposed cut backs are completely ignoring the fact that “preventing crime is actually the biggest advantage of CCTV.”
